I’ve listened to the overwhelming calls from you splendid folks, and this iPad-only Finer Things site is being merged into what was previously the iPhone site to make things easier on everyone. Please visit the new Finer Things in iOS for all things tips, apps, and polish about the world of iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad.

Apple released iOS 5 to the public today, which means we can open the doors for submissions about all the new features. I know a few slipped through during the beta period, but overall I prefer to respect NDAs, even when a company like Apple doesn’t seem to care much when publications don’t.

Feel free to let those iOS 5 submissions fly. Remember: be brief but descriptive, and take advantage of Tumblr’s different post types from the menu at the top of the submission form. They really help your posts shine.

Tweet Library, which lets you archive and curate your tweets, favorites, and retweets, has a clever calendar picker for moving back through your timeline. It displays a total tweet count on each day, and you can swipe back and forth between months, all the way back to when you first started using it.

Note: Because of limits that Twitter currently imposes on its API, Tweet Library can only pull down 3200 tweets on its first run. If you’ve posted more than that, Tweet Library can’t archive your entire account, at least not yet.

In OmniGraffle, the Omni Group’s professional diagramming tool for creating outlines, mind maps, wireframes, and more, you can download from Graffletopia. This allows you to add a variety of community-created stencil packs (most, if not all, of which are free), such as Adobe icons, business process modeling tools, and iPhone app mockups.

Flipboard, the social magazine for iPad, allows you to create new top level content sections from more than just Twitter accounts or lists. You can add a Facebook group, an Instagram friend, or a folder of feeds from Google Reader. Just look for the “add this to contents” button in the upper left.

Writing Kit, a new feature-packed iPad text editor that supports Markdown, CloudApp, TextExpander, Pinboard, Instapaper, research tools and much more, can apply proper attribution if you quote text from its built-in browser. Simply select text from a webpage, choose “Insert into Editor,” and the text will be pasted with the source page’s name properly linked.

When paired with a Bluetooth keyboard, an iPad will wake up where you left it by tapping a key. It doesn’t go to the unlock screen.

White on Black is a handy feature and setting the Triple-click Home makes it easy to access. Recommended uses include reading at night and practical jokes.

Bing for iPad uses a page-based interface, so Microsoft added some useful gestures that allow you to get around pretty quickly. Upon using the app for the first time, a handful of guides will appear to explain these gestures, but they’re only triggered when relevant—otherwise you won’t be bothered with them.
